Periactin is used to treat the symptoms of allergies including: sneezing, itchy or watery eyes and a runny nose. It is available in a generic form called cyproheptadine. It may also be used for other purposes as specified by a physician. Periactin is an antihistamine that reduces the histamine, a natural chemical, in the body.
Before taking Periactin or cyproheptadine you should inform your physician of any pre-existing conditions or diseases you may have or of any medications you are currently taking. These include both prescription and nonprescription. You should also tell your doctor if you have narrow-angle Glaucoma, a stomach ulcer or obstruction, an enlarged prostate or problems urinating, if you are elderly or if you suffer from a debilitating disease. You should also not take Periactin or cyproheptadine if you are allergic to any ingredients they contain. There are certain conditions that may restrict the use of Periactin or cyproheptadine. Your physician will help you determine whether or not this medication will be right for you.
Periactin or cyproheptadine should be taken as directed by your doctor. Read the label carefully and be sure to follow all directions concerning proper dosage and the administering of the medication. Consult your physician or pharmacist if you have any questions. Should you miss a dose, take it as soon as you realize you have done this. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosing schedule.
If you think you may have overdosed on Periactin or cyproheptadine you should seek emergency medical attention immediately. An overdose of the medication can prove fatal to a child. Overdose symptoms may include the following: large pupils, pale skin, vomiting or fainting.
While taking Periactin or cyproheptadine you should avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase some of the side effects. Also, Periactin or cyproheptadine may impair your ability to think correctly and remain alert so be careful if you drive or operate machinery.
Common side effects of Periactin or cyproheptadine include: allergic reaction, confusion, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, a seizure, ringing in your ears, a feeling that you might faint, a fast or pounding heartbeat, easy bruising or bleeding and fever or unusual weakness. You should consult with you physician right away if you experience any of these side effects. There may also be other symptoms that can be experienced when taking Periactin or cyproheptadine. If you develop any symptoms you feel are dangerous or harmful to you in any way, discuss them with your doctor.
The presence of certain side effects may signify a dosage adjustment is necessary or may even prohibit you from taking Periactin or cyproheptadine altogether. Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and make a determination accordingly. Some side effects may not be serious enough to warrant any real harm and in these cases, it may be okay to continue taking the medication.
